Kingian Nonviolence Training May 21 & 22
In times of trouble, nonviolence is a guiding light towards justice.
How to implement nonviolence and MLK’s principles of nonviolence is something everyone can learn. In this workshop, we will look at how the ideas of nonviolence can be applied personally, professionally, and politically in our own lives.
LCLT is proud to join Lopez Island Family Resource Center (LIFRC) in supporting a Kingian Nonviolence Training by the Civil Rights icon Dr. Bernard Lafayette, along with nonviolence trainer Mrs. Kate Lafayette and a team of expert trainers.
Dr. Lafayette stood shoulder to shoulder with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Congressman John Lewis in the fight for civil rights in the 50’s and 60’s. He was the field organizer for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) at Selma, Alabama in the run up to the March from Selma to Birmingham. He has devoted his entire life to teaching the methods of non-violence that were key to the successes of that era. Dr. Lafayette was the recipient of the Gandhi International Humanitarian Award in 2016. Kate Lafayette has devoted her life to improving opportunities for children and community through nonviolence. She is presently teaching nonviolence to youth across the U.S. and to ex-militants in South Africa, the Niger Delta and Nigeria.
Sandy and Rhea met Dr. and Mrs. Lafayette on the Civil Rights Project Pilgrimage last month and both have read his excellent book In Peace and Freedom: My Journey to Selma
The two-day training will be conducted on Monday, May 21 from 5:00pm-9:00 pm and Tuesday, May 22 from 8:30am-4:30 pm. Donations are accepted toward the training but no one turned away for lack of funds.
